The TCD led international consortium, Latin American Epidemiology Consortium in ALS (LAENALS), took place in Uruguay from 29th and 30th of January. The consortium serves to determine the prevalance of ALS in Latin America through collaborative work between Orla Hardiman and Cuban colleagues. So far, the research has led to the the hypothesis that the genetic admixture is protective in ALS. The work is funded through a competitive grant from the US Centre of Disease Control. It is the first study of its kind to be funded by the CDC outside of the USA.
